Commonwealth's Atty. Candidate Speaks Out

June 5, 2013

A candidate for Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney, Steve Deaton, is speaking out about rights restoration for violent felons.

The Democratic candidate greeted voters on the Downtown Mall on Wednesday.

Deaton said he is glad Governor Bob McDonnell took steps to make it easier for non-violent felons to re-renter society. However, Deaton believes too many people are being convicted of felonies in the first place.

"The Commonwealth's Attorney should not be prosecuting cases that have such a short jail time as felonies. Why not make those misdemeanors? You're going to save the state a heck of a lot of money, and you're going to save this person from being a 'convicted felon' for the rest of their life."

Deaton is challenging current Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Chapman in the Democratic primary next Tuesday, June 11.
