Council Candidate in Court

A candidate for the Charlottesville City Council is in trouble with the law.

Wes Bellamy turned himself in to Charlottesville Police on Monday on a charge of contempt of court for not showing up to court to face a traffic violation.

Court records indicate he was charged with driving on a suspended license on February 16, but didn't appear for a court hearing earlier this month.

Bellamy says it was just a scheduling mistake by the clerk of court's office, and he thought his court date had been changed.

"I feel that it's important as leaders to understand that miscommunication happens from time to time," said Bellamy. "People make mistakes. I'm aware that the clerk is human, and it's possible for the individual to have mistakenly entered the incorrect address as well as not put in the records that I asked for a continuance."

In a two-month span last year, Bellamy was charged with reckless driving and driving without license, and two speeding tickets in Albemarle County.

Bellamy is currently out of jail on bail and has another hearing scheduled in April.
