Local Democratic leaders formally threw their support behind Fifth District Congressional candidate John Douglass.
The former Air Force general's campaign hosted a rally Wednesday on the Downtown Mall for his supporters. Among them are a handful of Charlottesville City Council members and Peyton Williams, his one-time opponent for the Democratic nomination.
Williams conceded defeat last week and now says Douglass is the man to replace Rep. Robert Hurt (R-5th).
"We have to send Robert Hurt packing in November for all of our sakes. When Robert Hurt looks to this beautiful part of Virginia, he sees an environment to be plundered for uranium and profit," Williams said, campaigning for his former opponent. "When Robert Hurt votes in the House of Representatives, he looks to Eric Cantor for direction. When John Douglass votes in the House of Representatives, he will look to the people of this district."
Also on hand for the rally was Linda Perriello, the mother of former Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello. She read a statement from her son endorsing Douglass and calling for Democrats to vote for him this November.
