Another person has thrown his hat in the ring to challenge Rep. Robert Hurt (R-5th District) in the November election.

Retired Gen. John Dogulass of Fauquier County launched his campaign this week with a YouTube video. The Democrat joins Charlottesville veteran Peyton Williams Jr. who wants to replace the congressman in the U.S. House.

"We need to take back the House of Representatives for the Democratic Party," Douglass said. "The president has laid out an agenda for our country that's working."

Williams announced his candidacy earlier this year.

"Both of us will have to express more fully what our thoughts are and what our issues are," Williams said.

Even though Douglass' name might be new to residents of the Fifth District, he's been campaigning since last May. His Fauquier County farm once sat in Virginia's 10th District. After this year's redistricting, however, it now lies in the Fifth District.

"I can't run outside my home district. The people of Fauquier County have been good to me," Douglass said.

Both candidates believe jobs and education are the biggest issues facing the Fifth District.

"Jobs are necessary for us to help the economy, particularly in this area of Virginia, but along with that, we have to have a suitably trained populous," Williams said.

"We need our Congress to move away from the gridlock we've seen in recent years and get some things done, and I think the president's leadership is the place to start," Douglass said.

The Democratic primary to select who will face Rep. Hurt in November will take place on May 19.
