Local Democrats kicked off what is sure to be a busy weekend of campaigning with a rally Friday afternoon. Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman Brian Moran, former Congressman Tom Perriello, Senator Edd Houck and Senator Creigh Deeds were all in attendance at the University of Virginia.
Sen. Houck (D-17th) is running for re-election. He is being challenged by Republican Bryce Reeves. Perriello, a former Democratic U.S. Congressman, says even though it's an off election year Tuesday's results could shape the state for years to come.
"I think folks know we've got a Republican governor and a Republican House of Delegates. With a Democratic senate, it forces balanced government and it forces us to work together, which I think we need a lot more of," Perriello explained. "Two seats across the state can change that balance and we can see some of the more extreme things that we've seen across the country come into Virginia, and I don't think we want that in the commonwealth."
The rally was hosted by the UVA Democrats and was held at the Rotunda.
