Dog-days Primaries Set Stage in Fight for Senate

July 10, 2011

It will take more than the handful of competitive primaries to draw Virginia voters to the polls in August's dog days to decide the few unresolved nominees for November's legislative races.

A total of 20 primaries will be on ballots in selected districts on Aug. 23 - 10 each House contests and Senate contests. And most of them are Republican. Only two incumbents - one senator and one delegate - face primaries.

Senate primaries command the most attention.

Fired former state GOP Chairman Jeff Frederick is trying a comeback in Senate District 36 against "Tito The Builder" Munoz, who gained fleeting fame as a McCain backer in the 2008 presidential race.

Former Republican Del. Dick Black is also trying a comeback against two opponents in the Senate District 13 primary.
