John Douglass has sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt (R-5th District), asking the congressman to take action on uranium mining in Virginia.
The letter from Douglass, the Democrat who is challenging the one-term incumbent, calls for Hurt to introduce a bill to ban uranium mining within 50 miles of residential areas. It also accuses Hurt of having a financial interest in the mining, but the Hurt campaign denies that claim.
Hurt's father does have an investment stake in Virginia Uranium Inc., an operation reportedly worth $7 billion.
The Hurt campaign, however, says that uranium mining is a state issue, not a federal issue.
