Officials Expect Low Turnout at Special Election for Treasurer

April 1, 2013

The special election for Charlottesville City Treasurer is underway and as of 9 am Tuesday morning there were a little over 270 voters that showed up at different precincts around Charlottesville.

Voter officials believe that there will be a little over 400 residents that show up to cast their vote for city treasurer today.

Democratic candidate Jason Vandever and independent candidate John Pfaltz are running for the treasurer position. However, whoever wins today's special election will have to run again in the general election later this year on November 5th.

Overall people were interested in both candidates, but there were mixed reactions about the election.

"This is an out of the usual cycle, but the office of treasurer is a very important one and I know we have a competitive race here and I think both candidates are capable," says Charlottesville resident Leonard Schoppa

"I don't think it should be an elected office, but since it is I think we should go and choose a person who's going to serve," says Leora Friedberg, Charlottesville resident.

This is the first special election in the city of Charlottesville since 2001, when a senator's seat was empty.

Precincts will be open today until 7pm this evening.
