General John Douglass held a town hall meeting Monday evening, trying to win support from voters. Douglass is one of the Democratic candidates running for the Fifth District seat in the House of Representatives.

At the event at City Space in Charlottesville, Gen. Douglass says his experience in the military and as a farmer will help him win against Congressman Robert Hurt come November.

"I'm a farmer, my opponent has never served one minute in the service of this country and he isn't a farmer," he explained.

Douglass is a newcomer to the area, he became eligible to run when Fauquier County was redistricted. The former military general worked under former Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan. He says his core issues are education, health care and job creation.

"When Virginia invests in education, industry comes to Virginia. That's why education is so important to me," said Douglass.

During the town hall meeting Douglass answered questions from the crowd on topics like gun control and women's reproductive rights, but some wished he had focused his talk more on job creation.

"I was very impressed with Douglass," said Charlottesville resident Janet Wolfe. "But I wish he would would have touched more on the work component."

There are two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, Douglass and Peyton Williams. The Fifth District will choose their Democratic candidate in May.
