GOP Surges to Largest House of Delegates Majority in History

November 9, 2011

Republicans have expanded their majority in Virginia's House of Delegates, laying claim to a record 66 seats.

That eclipses the previous high of 64 seats Republicans held after the 2001 elections. And it does not include the House's lone independent who caucuses with the GOP, conservative Lacey Putney of Bedford.

Democrats, who ruled the House of Delegates from the end of Reconstruction until 1999, were left with just 32 seats Tuesday, pending the outcome of one race that was too close to call early Wednesday.

In the undecided race, Republican David Ramadan led Democrat Mike Kondratick by 50 votes out of 10,000 cast, a margin narrow enough for a recount.
