August 23, 2011

In a close race, Louisa County Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas Garrett Jr. won the Republican nomination in the newly created 22nd State Senate District.

Garrett received 25.94% of the vote, just barely ahead of second place finisher Brian Bates, who had 24.57%. Mark Peake came in third with 22.5% of the vote, followed by Bryan Rhode at 20.5%, and Claudia Tucker with 6.45%.

Voter turnout was about 10.5%.

The newly created 22nd District represents parts of Louisa, Fluvanna, and Buckingham Counties.

Garrett had campaigned as a conservative and won the endorsement of Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. In November, he will face former Lynchburg vice-mayor Bert Dodson, a Democrat.
