During the Democratic Caucus in Albemarle County Monday evening, General John Douglass topped Peyton Williams by a vote of 97 to 23.

Douglass also won delegates in Nelson, Prince Edward and Bedford counties during this evening's caucuses.

"It is time for us to roll up our sleeves and turn to the hard work of winning this seat back for the Democratic party," said Douglass, following his victories.

Of the 140 voters who showed up to the Albemarle caucus, supporters of both Williams and Douglass were sitting on either side of the room. It became clear early who had the most votes.

"I am a little disappointed that Mr. Williams is not getting the support that I think he deserves. But, I feel very strongly that Mr. Williams is the right person to represent the Fifth district," commented Laura Kennon.

Both men are seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Republican Congressman Robert Hurt in his re-election bid in the Fifth District.

Douglass is a former military general who worked under former Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, while Williams retired from the U.S. Army and received a masters degrees from the University of Virginia. He works in Orange as an ecologist.

The Fifth District Caucus will choose their Democratic candidate at the Convention in Nelson County on May 19.
