United States Senate hopeful George Allen campaigned in Albemarle County Wednesday. He spoke at the Albemarle GOP Breakfast in Scottsville.
Allen says he wants to use American energy resources, including those located off the coast of Virginia. The former Governor of Virginia believes that will drive fuel costs down, create new jobs and keep revenue here instead of overseas.
"We have a punishing counterproductive energy policy. These high gasoline prices are really hurting a lot of families and business is way down in tourist places," the 2012 Republican candidate said.
Whatever is done, Allen says we need to act now and act fast.
"I don't think we should doddle. There's an urgency for action, but right now in Washington there hasn't been the action that's needed to get our country moving in the right direction. I hope and aim to change that," he claimed.
Allen is one of five candidates seeking the Republican nomination - Jamie Radtke, Tim Donner, David McCormick and Bishop E.W. Jackson Sr. - to face likely Democratic nominee Tim Kaine.
The Senate seat was vacated by Jim Webb.
