Gov. McDonnell Wants to Give Teachers 2 Percent Raise

Governor Bob McDonnell says he wants to keep good teachers in the Commonwealth. That's why he has proposed a list of incentives in Richmond on Thursday.
Under proposed legislation teachers would get their first pay raise in five years, totaling two percent.
During his speech, the Governor said Virginia's teachers are underpaid and many stay after hours and work through their lunch and on weekends.
That approach, he said, could hurt young learners.
"If we do not have young people who are career ready or college ready when they graduate from high school, then we've failed."
The raise would cost taxpayers $58.7 million during the 2014 fiscal year.
It will also allow for $808,000 in incentive money to recruit and retrain middle and high school teachers in sciences and math.
