Terry McAuliffe addressed the media for the first time Wednesday as governor-elect, continuing to stress a bipartisan, mainstream Virginia government.

“I am excited to do this job,” McAuliffe said, laughing. “People say, ‘He’s always excited.’”

McAuliffe held a press conference Wednesday in the Virginia State Capitol after defeating Republican challenger Ken Cuccinelli in a divisive governor’s race.

“The main message that came out of last night is [voters] want folks working together in a bipartisan, mainstream, pragmatic way,” he said.

McAuliffe said he spent the morning reaching out to state senators of both political parties to discuss their shared goals. One of them, he said, is Medicaid expansion. McAuliffe said it’s the right thing to do, but it must be done in a smart way.

“Twenty-nine governors have already agreed to accept the Medicaid expansion,” McAuliffe said. “Why would we possibly want our money to go to those other states to provide health care for their citizens, paid for by Virginia residents?”

Flanked by his wife and his transition team, chaired by Del. Jennifer McClellan, McAuliffe said he wants to build a bipartisan administration with a focus on jobs, economic development, education and reforming state government.

“Executive order No. 1, as then Gov. Kaine did, is no more discrimination based on sexual orientation in the state workplace,” McAuliffe said. “Executive order No. 2 would apply to myself and my family that we can take no gift over $100.”

The man who has run so many Democratic campaigns finally sees himself winning his own, and the reality of taking the governor’s mansion is beginning to set in.

“I am so excited to get going with this and start helping people,” he said.

McAuliffe said he will release a broader transition plan over the coming days.

McAuliffe announced Albemarle County resident and author John Grisham will co-chair the inaugural committee.
