Local GOP Gears Up for Friday's Michelle Obama Visit

July 18, 2012

Charlottesville continues to gear up for First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to the city on Friday, including some local Republicans.

"I'm glad she came to visit and I wish their candidate well," said Cindi Burket, chairwoman of the Albemarle GOP.

The local Republican party won't be watching from the sidelines.

"I think it does make people sort of delineate between the two campaigns very sharply," Burket said.

Burket said local Republicans can have an active role in the campaign stop. She said it's a chance to learn more about the issues pivotal to this election.

"We're talking the difference between small government and large government. We're talking about making personal choices versus having the government make those choices for you," she said.

With Virginia considered a hotly contested swing state for the presidential election, the local GOP hopes to see former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney come to town, too.

"By coming to central Virginia, he would garner a great deal of enthusiasm for this part of the state," Burket said.

She added that Romney would bring the same type of energy that Michelle Obama is expected to bring Friday.

"People would come in mass to see him," she said. "I think he would garner a lot of just down-right, heart-thumping, let's-go-do-this-and-get-it-done kind of feel."
