Polls Are Now Open For Democratic Primary

June 11, 2013

The polls opened at 6 am Tuesday morning for Virginia's Democratic primary and the City of Charlottesville has the largest ballot in the Commonwealth.

Among the many candidates on Charlottesville's ballot are five City Council candidates. They are running for the two seats that will face the Republicans (Mike Farruggio and "Buddy" Weber) in the November election.

CBS19 spoke with a few voters who told us how they were able to make a decision for the two City Council seats. They spoke to candidates, went to town hall meetings and even read their bios.

"So I just read them all and tried to pick a nice diverse group of candidates," says Charlottesville resident Beth Opila.

"My concerns are education locally here in Charlottesville, that's very important to me," says Charlottesville resident Evelyn Mason. "Also the environment, so the ones who basically talked about that, that's who I went for."

According to a 9 am count, only 2.45 percent of voters came out to the Charlottesville precincts and less than half a percent came out to Albemarle County. precincts.

There will be another count later this afternoon.

CBS19 will be updating voting numbers as election results come in.
