Lt. Gov. Candidates Discuss Social Issues at Debate

Sept. 25, 2013

Candidates for lieutenant governor squared off in a debate in Arlington on Tuesday night.

Democrat Ralph Northam and Republican EW Jackson traded jabs throughout the evening, discussing mainly economic and financial issues.

However, the topic of social issues also came up, and the impact that laws like the Personhood Bill would have on the appeal of Virginia.

"What woman, in her right mind, would want to come to the Commonwealth of Virginia when most forms of contraception have been criminalized, and in vitro fertilization has been criminalized," asked Northam.

"I am unabashedly, pro-life," said Jackson. "I don't make any apologies for that and I will persuade others that it the right thing to do to protect the lives of unborn children."

The candidates also offered opinions about the new federal health care law, part of which begins on the first of October.
