Math Teacher Enters City School Board Race

August 12, 2011

A former math teacher Friday announced his candidacy for a seat on Charlottesville City School Board.

Steven Latimer made the campaign announcement Friday morning at the steps of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. The native Virginian holds a B.S. in applied mathematics from Virginia Commonwealth University and has taught high school math in the Newport News public school system.

Latimer tells CBS19 he will work hard to improve reading and math scores in City schools.

"I feel that the performance is shameful and uncharacteristic of the values and resources of a world-class city. We can do better. And we have to do better," he said.

Following the announcement, Latimer was a guest on The Schilling Show on Newsradio 1070 WINA. He said he wants to create magnet and charter schools in Charlottesville.

Latimer also plans to actively monitor the reconfiguring of Upper Walker Elementary and Buford Middle schools. In February, the School Board decided to house grades six through eight in Buford and turn Walker Upper into a multi-use facility.

The election will take place on Nov. 8.

Four seats are up for grabs. Interim member Guian McKee is seeking a permanent spot. He is joined in the race by local health coach Ivana Kadija , Amy Laufer, local attorney Jennifer McKeever and now Latimer.
