Democratic candidate for governor Terry McAuliffe stopped by Albemarle County Monday afternoon to get a first-hand look at how the looming sequester could affect businesses in Virginia.
McAuliffe toured Mikro Systems, a technology company in Albemarle County that develops cost-effective products and services for its clients. Its CEO says 20 percent of the company's business comes from the government, mainly the Department of Energy and the U.S. Air Force.
If Congress can't come up with a compromise on the looming sequester by Friday, the company fears it could take a financial hit through the loss of government grants.
McAuliffe is urging lawmakers to take action.
"I'm running for governor on an economic plan of working with both sides," said McAuliffe. "If you'll be willing to work with me on job creation, doesn't matter if you're a Democrat, Republican or Independent, we gotta work together, and I'm very worried about what's going on in Washington today."
McAuliffe says he takes an interest in the sequester debate because his platform focuses on economic development and pro-business ideas.
