Melampy Announces Independent Run for Clerk of Court

September 27, 2011

After losing the Democratic nomination for Charlottesville Clerk of Court, Pam Melampy has announced she will be running as an independent candidate.

Melampy, a deputy clerk for the Albemarle County Circuit Court, says voters need options in the upcoming election and she feels her platform resonates with City residents. Her focuses include friendly service, cross-training employees and increasing access to information online.

Plus, Melampy wants to put partisan politics aside.

“I feel like Charlottesville politics has gotten a little bit stagnant. There's a certain group of people who dominate by partisanship, but the Clerk of Court should not be a partisan race to begin with,” she said.

Melampy came in third in the Democratic primary, behind winner Llezelle Dugger and incumbent Paul C. Garrett. Dugger received 62 percent of the vote, Garrett 26 percent and Melampy only 12 percent.

Now an Independent candidate, Melampy says she'll take a pay cut if elected. She pledged to give ten percent of her yearly salary back to the community in the form on donations to the ACSPCA, the Charlottesville Boys and Girls Club and Hospice of the Piedmont.
