Norris Not Running for Re-election to City Council

January 28, 2013

A shakeup is in store for Charlottesville City Council in the upcoming election, as councilor and former mayor Dave Norris announced he will not seek a third term.

Norris made the announcement on WINA's Charlottesville Right Now radio show with host Coy Barefoot.

"We are in campaign season again, and a lot of people have been encouraging me to run for a third term on city council, but I am here today to announce that I will not be a candidate in the 2013 city council election," Norris said on the program.

When his term is up next January, Norris said he has no plans to return to his seat in council chambers.

"I'll miss it, but on the other hand I think it is time for some new blood on city council and time for me to take on some new challenges," Norris said after the announcement.

Norris was first elected as a Democrat in 2006. Just two years later, he began his first of two terms as Charlottesville mayor. In his seven years on council so far, he said he's proud of what he's helped to accomplish.

"I ran for city council in order to push for certain issues and make some positive change happen in the community," he said.

Issues like the creation of dedicated funds in the budget for affordable housing.

"Being able to create the fund and to see the fruits of that by opening the doors of the Crossings, for instance, that's what makes it all worthwhile," he said.

Norris shrugged off the question of any future political plans.

"My ambition was to get elected to council, maybe someday be mayor of Charlottesville," he said. "I really didn't ever see myself going further than that, and I still don't see myself going further than that."

Norris said he plans to watch the 2013 council race from the sidelines.

His seat is just one of two up on council this election cycle. The other is held by Vice Mayor Kristin Szakos. She said she plans to announce next month whether she'll seek another term.
