The 2012 Presidential Election is still eight months away, however, Democrats in Charlottesville are already thinking ahead. Sunday, the Obama Campaign Office, located on the Downtown Mall, officially opened its doors.

Senator Creigh Deeds (D-25th) and Delegate David Toscano (D-57th) spoke to the dozens crowded into the headquarters. Both focused on the importance of volunteers.

This year, the campaign is organized differently. Volunteers will sign up based on what neighborhood they live in. The idea is that those volunteers will know their neighbors and neighborhood the best.

Linda Perriello, a volunteer with Organizing for America, and the mother of former Congressman Tom Perriello, says, "If you are going to build a grass roots, people-to-people organization, then it is important to have committed volunteers. People who really tell the story."

Sen. Deeds, adds, "You can have all the paid professionals, you can have all the pollsters and the media people that you want, but if you don't have a base of volunteers, people that will do the hard work of the campaign, then it can't happen."

In the basement of the headquarters, volunteers also signed a banner explaining why they wanted to help out.
