Poll: Majority of Virginians Support Medical Marijuana, Split on Same-Sex Marriage

March 31, 2014

A new poll shows Virginia voters support medical marijuana by an overwhelming 84 percent, but support for recreational marijuana is divided. Additionally, roughly half of Virginians support same-sex marriage.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday, a majority of Virginia Republicans (75 percent) and Democrats (92 percent) support medical marijuana for the Commonwealth.

Forty-six percent of those polled say they support legalizing marijuana for personal use. Among Democrats, 58 percent support the measure, while only 27 percent of Republicans are for legalization.

A majority of voters 18 to 29 years old support legalizing marijuana for personal use (71 percent), with support dropping through the age groups. Most voters over 65 years old are opposed (66 percent).

"When it comes to legalizing marijuana for recreational use Virginians are divided," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

With strong support from women, half of Virginia voters in the poll favor allowing same- sex couple to get married in the Commonwealth.

Support for same-sex marriage is 69 percent among Democrats and 52 percent among independent voters. Seventy percent of Republicans oppose it.

Voters under the age of 30 years old support it by 69 percent, with support at 50 percent or higher among voters 30 to 64 years old. Voters over 65 are opposed by 56 percent.

"Support for same-sex marriage in Virginia shows a similar pattern to support for use of marijuana: The younger you are, the more Democratic you are, the more likely you are to support both of these social issues," Brown said.

From March 19 - 24, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,288 voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.7 percentage points.
