RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Polls are open in three special elections for seats in the General Assembly, including a critical race that will determine control of the state Senate.

Voters in southwest Virginia are set to choose Tuesday among Republican Ben Chafin, Democrat Mike Hymes, and independent Rick Mullins. The winner will determine whether Republicans or Democrats control the General Assembly's upper chamber.

Both parties have pumped large amounts of money into the 38th Senate District contest. On Monday, the Democratic Party of Virginia reported giving Hymes an additional $230,000 worth of in-kind donations. The winner will replace Democrat Phil Puckett, who quit the Senate in June.

Also on Tuesday, voters in northern Virginia and the Hampton Roads area will pick new lawmakers to replace two recently resigned Democratic House delegates.
