The Charlottesville City Registrar has released election results for Tuesday's special election for treasurer.
Sheri Iachetta says Democrat Jason Vandever has received 1,280 votes. Independent candidate John Pfaltz got 397 votes. That is with all 10 precincts reporting.
"When I saw the unofficial results, it was really exciting. It kind of took a minute to take it all in," said Vandever at his results party Tuesday night.
This was the first time in more than 40 years Charlottesville has seen a contested treasurer's race.
"It's good to have contested races. It's good for people to see that the treasurer's office is an elected position, and having an election like this, where it was the focus of the election raises the profile of the office, so I think that's a good thing for the city," said Vandever.
Vandever has been serving as interim treasurer since October, when Jennifer Brown retired. He has been working under for Brown for the last four years.
"It meant a lot to me to be treasurer. I was treasurer for 19 years, and I searched for a good deputy," said Brown. "I could not be more excited. He is just the best person I could ask for to follow me in office."
Though he did not win the race, Pfaltz says he is not finished tackling what he considers to be one of the most important issues in the city.
"One of the issues that I've been raising is the unfunded retirement fund for our city employees, and that's not going to go away, and I'm not going to go away," said Pfaltz.
Iachetta says the results are unofficial until the electoral board canvasses and certifies all the results Wednesday morning.
A total of 1,683 voters cast ballots on Tuesday, which is a turnout of 5.29%.
