Rep. Hurt: Not Convinced on Use of Force Against Syria

September 5, 2013

President Obama wants to take military action against Syrian regime for the use of chemical weapons and wants Congress to take a vote on September 9th.

About 20 people gathered in Congressman Robert Hurt's Charlottesville office today to ask him which way he will vote on the issue.

"I'd like to hear what he's thinking but I also want to let him know what I and many others are thinking, that it would be a terrible thing to involve us in yet another war," says Virginia Rovnyak,

On Wednesday night many of the same people met up to discuss their concerns with the president's decision and gathered today to hear from the congressman.

"If he votes for it without some remarkably unexpected explanation he needs to be removed from office,” says David Swanson, Charlottesville activist. “If he fails to act if denied a vote, there needs to be serious action from the public."

But has the congressman made a decision? And how will he vote on the issue?

"I can say at this point I'm not convinced that we should be doing this but I do, with all due respect to our Commander in Chief, I do want to give him an opportunity to make his case,” says Representative Robert Hurt, (R) 5th District.

Questions came from left and right during the meeting with people explaining why they are concerned with the attack. But overall many hope that Rep. Hurt will vote no.

"We're not voting today and I'm not sure that we will be voting until I have that information but as I said at this point I'm unconvinced," says Rep. Hurt.
