Republican Senate Hopeful Tours 22nd District

August 16, 2011

Claudia Tucker, candidate for the Republican nomination for the Virginia Senate in the 22nd District, toured the district Tuesday highlighting the need to continue to cut spending in Richmond and promoting her plan to foster an atmosphere to encourage businesses to grow and create jobs.

Her tour included stops in Lynchburg, Appomattox, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Louisa, Goochland, Farmville and Amherst.

Tucker's plan includes spending cuts, tax relief, elimination of governmental barriers to business, assistance for farmers and expansion of wireless Internet access for rural Virginia.

"We've seen the bruising battles in Washington, DC over the issue of spending, and believe me, in this economy - with the expansion of mandated spending on certain entitlement programs - the battles over spending will once again appear right up the road in Richmond when the General Assembly convenes again this January," said the 54-year-old former member of the Amherst County Planning Commission. "The federal credit rating has been downgraded - and that threatens Virginia's own bond rating. That's why it's very important that we begin the conversation now. A conversation about where we can cut government - areas where there is duplication, programs that either don't work or are inefficient."

Tucker outlined some areas where significant savings can be achieved for the benefit of the taxpayers: consolidation of services like accounting; stop competing with private business; move state jobs to rural areas.

"These are but a handful of ideas to control spending as we know that greater demands on our limited taxpayer dollars are coming in the very near future," Tucker said.
