Rising Gas Prices Driving Up the Campaign

Although the cost is climbing - the average price of gas in Charlottesville is around $3.70 a gallon - the Obama Administration and Del. David Toscano (D-57th) argue the prices have overall dropped since the President took office.

Toscano says the President's policies have reduced our reliance on foreign oil, which has, in turn, helped make the U.S. more energy independent.

"The Obama administration has been making progress in this area, and let's stay the course. He's working hard to increase production, both in oil and natural gas and investing in renewables," Del. Toscano argued.

But local Republicans say the President's policies are causing gas prices to go up. Albemarle County Republican Party Co-Chair Steve Peters says by drilling, the U.S. can increase production.

"When we increase the amount of the resources, we lower the costs of them and vice versa. If you don't let us get to those resources, you will drive the costs up and all the related products that come from them," said Peters.

Charlottesville Democratic Co-Chair Jim Nix says there are other solutions to help the U.S. become less dependent on oil.

"[Former Virginia] Governor Kaine agrees with the President. We need to continue an all of the above energy policy, not just reliance on oil. We need to stop those unnecessary subsidies to the oil companies. They don't need them," said Nix.

The Obama Campaign will be holding meetings to discuss foreign all across the state this week.
