UPDATED: Sarvis Speaks Out Against ABC Policies

August 5, 2013

Libertarian candidate for Governor, Robert Sarvis, spoke out against the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) during a press conference in Charlottesville Monday morning.

Sarvis explained his three-part plan to limit the ABC’s authority. He wants to privatize all liquor sales, both retail and wholesale. He wants to move all enforcement and funding of the ABC’s laws and regulations to local and state officers. Finally, Sarvis wants to begin to address the greater problem of increasing militarization of police tactics.

“When you have an ABC enforcement office they are focused on one thing and one thing only and they have a tendency, and any organization like that, has a tendency to pursue something without any perspective,” says Sarvis.

This press conference stems from the recent ABC incident where armed undercover agents arrested 20-year-old Elizabeth Daly. ABC officers believed she purchased alcohol illegally, but later found it was sparkling water.

Sarvis hopes that shifting ABC law enforcement from the government to local jurisdictions will restore trust between the officers and the community.
