Two GOP Candidates Join City Council Race

April 25, 2013

Two Republicans announce they are running for seats on the all-Democrat Charlottesville City Council.

Buddy Weber and Mike Farruggio announced their candidacies on the Downtown Mall on Thursday.

Weber, a criminal defense attorney, says he is frustrated with how the current City Council handles public issues.

A focus of Weber's campaign will be public housing in Charlottesville.

Mike Farruggio is a veteran of the police force hoping to improve infrastructure and people management within the city.

In his announcement, Farruggio specifically mentions his disagreement with the new tax on water run off.

"Enacting this tax while the city manages enterprise funds collected from utility fees for such improvements and maintenance, is plain wrong," says Farruggio.

Both candidates agree that getting the support of Democrats in Charlottesville will be difficult, but they hope, between now and the election, that residents can get to know them better.

"I know that we cannot win this election without tha broad support of Democrats, Republicans and Independents," says Weber. "Mike and I will work hard to earn your trust and your vote."
