Va. Governor Supports Ending Cohabitation Ban

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell says it's time to end a Virginia law that makes it a crime for unmarried couples to live together.

He also indicated Tuesday on his monthly radio show on Washington's WTOP radio that he supports a ban on smoking in cars when minors are present, but feels its "a bit of nanny government."

The Republican governor said the law that makes it a misdemeanor for unwed couples to cohabitate is "antiquated."

As a graduate student at Pat Robertson's Regent University, McDonnell railed against "cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators" in a 1989 thesis. He didn't endorse the concept of unwed households Tuesday, but said people should not face criminal penalties for it.

He was also noncommittal on whether Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli should leave office to run for governor.
