President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney know the importance of winning Virginia. The battleground state could determine who sits in office next term. The student vote could be a determining factor.

"There's been a lot of voter apathy among my generation, and I think that we really need to over come that. We can be the deciding factor I think in this election, or at least play major portion one way or the other," said University of Virginia student Riley Panko.

Both political sides recognize that President Obama had a groundswell of support from students in 2008, some say that's no longer the case.

"I think the times have changed," said Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Virginia). "I think that young people had a disproportional high share of unemployment graduating from college with debt and can't find a job."

The national unemployment rate still sits above 8 percent. That number has been holding steady for eight months.

UVa student Tess Goodman said, "I think he still got a lot of support and I think he's still the person that lot of people on college campuses is going to choose."

Republicans say that Romney is gaining young voters.

"I'm encouraging young folk to get out, get involved, make a difference and vote for Romney," said McDonnell.

The final decision could be determined, either way, by student voters.
