The year 2011 was a big year for politics in Virginia. Among the major developments:
Gov. Bob McDonnell's plan to privatize liquor stores went nowhere.
Republican George Allen announced his intent to win back the U.S. Senate seat he lost in 2008 to Democrat Jim Webb, who later said he would not seek another term. Democrat Tim Kaine, like Allen a former governor, joined the race to succeed Webb.
The legislature passed a measure to tighten abortion clinic regulations but failed to reach agreement on new U.S. House districts.
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli announced he will oppose Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling for the Republican nomination for governor in 2013.
Republicans picked up two state Senate seats in the November elections to forge a 20-20 tie with Democrats.
