Virginia's 5th District congressional candidates Peyton Williams and John Douglass made the rounds at the Charlottesville Democratic Caucus. The pair spoke at Charlottesville High School, trying to gain the majority of delegates.

"We need to pick a Democratic candidate that we feel is our strongest candidate," caucus chair Jim Nix said.

After votes were counted, Douglass received 10 delegates votes and two alternates. Williams received seven delegate votes and two alternates.

The number of delegates from different cities and counties will determine who will win the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt (R-5th District) in the November election.

Williams and Douglass also tried to sway undecided voters. Patricia Eldredge went into Saturday’s caucus undecided. She's looking for clarification on the issues of gun control and the economy.

"I think that one of the candidates has been quite good at expressing his stand on several of the issues. And the other candidate less so," said Eldredge.

The candidates say education and job security are key issues in this election.

"If we don't have at trained workforce, we can not have business come in and increase the number of jobs," Williams said.

“When I become the U.S. congressman for Virginia's 5th District, we're going to work together with people on both sides of the aisle to invest more in education," said Douglass.

The 5th District Convention will be held in Nelson County on May 19, where the Democratic nominee will be announced.
