Virginia Sen. Mark Warner sounded off Sunday morning on CBS' Face the Nation about the recent government shutdown and sequestration.

The Democratic senator said the combination of the shutdown and sequester cuts will have long-term effects on the economy.

Warner said you can't start and stop the largest enterprise in the world -- in this case, the federal government -- without adding costs.

"I'm an advocate of a big deal, but we ought to at least first start and make sure that we actually operate the government for a year going forward with a solid budget and find ways to alleviate some of the damage also being done by sequestration," Warner told moderator Bob Schieffer.

Warner went on to say the sequestration, or automatic spending cuts that took effect earlier this year, is the "stupidest way possible" to go about cutting government.
