School Supports Student with Heart Disease

Feb. 20, 2014

Students at Hollymead Elementary School have been busy shooting hoops, and jumping rope, but it's not just for fun and games.

Since January student, parents, and teachers have been raising money for the Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart association.

Third grader Devyn Reigen says students look forward to the event each year

"The whole school sent emails, and we talked to friends," Reigen said. "I raised $270."

The money goes to the American Heart Association for research and education. Hollymead has taken part in the fundraising for the past several years. This year they raised money to honor Hollymead kindergartner Esme Curran.

"We're doing it for her and kids like her so that she can talk about her heart, and what she's been through so that kids can understand and relate to somebody," said P.E. teacher Barbara Rosen.

Five-year-old Esme was born with congenital heart disease. She has had six surgeries including three open heart surgeries.

"I was just asleep so I didn't really feel it," said Esme.

Esme says she loves going to school and doing crafts with her friends.

"She does everything. She'll tell you she can't do judo, or ride roller coasters, or do anything that will make her heart pump really really fast, or anything that will scare her. She does everything just like any other five year old girl," Rosen said

So far Hollymead has raised nearly $13,000 for the American Heart Association.
