Albemarle Co. Middle Schools Adding New Resource Officers

Sept 5, 2013

Albemarle County is working to improve school safety. Over the next couple of years, each middle school in the district will be outfitted with a new school resource officer (SRO). Walton Middle School near Scottsville is first on the list.

Students, faculty and staff will soon see Officer Ron Davis walking the halls of Walton Middle School every day.

He'll be in the building to help with any issues that come up, ensure safety in the event of a threat and help with problems like bullying.

"We have seen with our research that if a SRO is put in a middle school or spends time at the elementary school, they can make that difference in a young person’s life who we see at risk," said Lt. Tim Aylor, Albemarle County Police Department.

"The school resource officer's role is not only about assisting us with ensuring safety with students, but also that critical time in middle school students lives where you can't seem to have enough positive role models for a students to be listeners for any problems of issues they may have and just help them get through some really tough transitions years in middle school," said Alison Dwier-Seldon, Principal, Walton Middle School.

SRO's will also help out in the classroom. Although, students are just in middle school, Officer Davis will talk about the dangers of texting while driving and driving under the influence.

Albemarle County plans to add a school resource officer to every middle school over the next five years.
