Albemarle Co. Students Take Part in Immigration Day

Oct. 30, 2013

Students at Free Union Country School in Albemarle County are travelling back in time for a history lesson.

Wednesday was Immigration Day for 2nd and 3rd grade students.

Teachers, parents and staff all took part.

Kids simulated what it would be like to sail on a ship to Ellis Island, be processed and become an American citizen back in 1907.

Teachers say this hands-on lesson helps kids better understand how immigration worked in the early 1900's.

"Certainly we've been learning and journaling and looking at pictures and things but it's not until you actually experience and do the simulation that this is a memory that stays with the kids for the rest of their lives," said Blair Amberly, Teacher, Free Union Country School.

'Well, if you read about it you really wouldn't know what it would feel like, but if you did it you would know what it would feel like,' said Kallan Walker, Student, Free Union Country School.

The school puts on this simulation every other year.
