Back-to-School Vaccinations

August 14, 2013

Students in Louisa County started school today and both Albemarle County and Charlottesville City schools begin next Wednesday, August 21st. But if students don't have all of their shots, they won't be able to go to school.

For kindergarteners those shots include the Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis shot (DTaP), MMR, which fights against Measles, Mumps and Rubella, and they will also need to get the Polio vaccine and the 2nd shot for the chicken pox.

It is required that 6th graders get the T-DaP vaccine, which is a stronger dose of the DTaP, protecting them against the whooping cough. The Meningitis and HPV vaccines are also required.

Doctors recommend girls get the first dose of the HPV vaccine between the ages of 11 and 12, but it is very important that students get their T-DaP shot before returning to school.

“We feel it's extremely important because it prevents them from getting Pertussis or the whooping cough,” says Nursing and Immunizations Coordinator Alice Sorum. “The main thing that we want to see is that anyone who gets pertussis doesn't pass it on to babies and it is a school requirement so they won’t be allowed to enter school unless they got that shot.”

The health department in Charlottesville off of Rose Hill Drive will be offering free vaccinations all day Thursday, with no appointment needed.

You can also go to your local physician to get your child vaccinated.
