CHS Juniors Bound for Middle East, Central Asia

June 11, 2013

Two Charlottesville High School juniors are heading overseas to study language and culture during the summer break.

Carman Drake will travel to Jordan to study Arabic and Richard Potter will be going to Tajikistan to study Persian.

The U.S. Department of State National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLIY) Scholarship Program awarded Drake, Potter, and over 600 other high school students the opportunity to learn less commonly-taught languages.

The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; language testing; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; meals; and accommodations, usually with a host family.

Launched as part of a U.S. government initiative in 2006, NSLIY seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal instruction and informal language practice in an immersion environment.

NSLIY offers overseas study opportunities in Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian, and Turkish.
