Fewer Va. Schools Earn Full Accreditation

Sept. 20, 2013

Following a drop in Standards of Learning test scores, fewer schools met Virginia accreditation standards this year, according to the Department of Education.

Officials say the lower scores are a result of a new test geared towards college and career-readiness.

Seventy-seven percent of Virginia's schools have received full accreditation, 16 percentage points lower than last year.

Fully accredited school divisions include Charlottesville, Nelson County and Orange County.

Albemarle, Louisa, Greene and Fluvanna County schools did not receive full accreditation.

Ten newly opened schools in the Commonwealth have been automatically rated as Conditionally Accredited for 2013-2014.

At least 75 percent of students must pass reading and writing SOL tests, and at least 70 percent must pass state assessments in mathematics, science and history to earn full accreditation. High schools must also meet a benchmark for graduation.
