Even with the beautiful weather on Saturday, more than 40 local girls spent the day 'geeking out' inside at Crozet Elementary School.

The Albemarle County elementary school students decided to stay inside to learn about technology and how women can contribute to the digital world.

Teachers, parents and high school students taught three special programs aimed at teaching trial and error, persistence and problem solving.

The idea came about because girls are underrepresented in the technology world.

"I like the computer aspect. When I was in third grade, a lot of guys, they had a robotics club and there wasn't one girl," Henley Middle School student Cami Kielbasa said. "Same when I was in fourth and fifth grade, not one girl. It's the computer aspect and just knowing that we can do it, too."

This was the first Girls Geek Day but with so many girls excited to be there and learn what's out there for them, they're hoping to do it again and spread the word.
