The Monticello High School Band is trying a new strategy to raise funds using the talent they already have.
Members of the band brought their instruments and music directly into the Charlottesville and Albemarle County community Saturday afternoon during "Tag Day."
Donations of $5 or more to the music program got supporters a student-designed window cling that says: "I Support Monticello High School Music."
One group of students greeted shoppers outside of Sam's Club on Route 29 to let everyone know who they are, what they can do and why their program needs more money.
Students say they have never done this kind of fundraiser before, but they say it is more fun than just handing out flyers.
"When people aren't playing, we hand out flyers and it's really great because the music kind of goes that way. We're not just handing them flyers; they can hear us, too," said trumpet and drum player Kristen Grimshaw.
The money their music brings in will go toward new concert uniforms and updated equipment.
Band members expect to raise close to $1,000 total.
