Schoolyard Gardens Educate with Fruits and Vegetables

September 21, 2013

The City of Charlottesville is growing students' minds one garden at a time.

Six Charlottesville elementary schools showed off their schoolyard gardens Saturday with a tour.

Garden coordinators shared information about the different types of plants at each site.

Clark Elementary has a wildlife garden with plants native to Charlottesville and Albemarle County. But the goal is to give students an opportunity to learn more about where plants come from.

“Our goal last year had been a seed for every student, so everyone would plant a seed either in the classroom or in the garden,” says Clark Elementary School garden coordinator Eiley Patterson. “This year our goal is a vegetable or fruit for every student, so every student would be able to sample something from the garden.”

Students at each of the elementary schools helped to plant all of the gardens.
