Shannon Foundation Awards More Than $17k in Teacher Grants

August 15, 2014

From creating simulated oceans in tanks to making race cars from milk jugs, teachers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County are coming up with new ways to get kids learning.

To help them with that effort, every year the Shannon Foundation chooses several lucky educators to receive as much as ten thousand dollars for their proposals.

"The whole idea of the foundation is to provide extra money for teachers' ideas that are innovative creative ideas that will help benefit children in their classrooms," said James Cooper, President of The Shannon Foundation.

This year the foundation has awarded more than $17,000 to 15 recipients.

One of those recipients is a teacher from Western Albemarle High School.

The $710 she received this year will go toward an educational robot built by students at the school's robotics program.

"The robot we have now did very well and got to Super Regionals at last year's competition so we want to show it off in order to do that we need to be able to have the new money to build this year's robot," said Caroline Bertrand, Robotics Program Director.

Bertrand is one of 425 teachers to be awarded a grant since the program started.

Since then the organization has given out more than $300,000, that's money that helps students like Josh Reid find a passion in learning.

"Without them I wouldn't have all the fun experiences of the competition and we wouldn't have any parts to build our robots, so without them we wouldn't exist," he said.
