Family Embezzles $250K from Va. Fire Department

August 18, 2010

A Bedford County woman has pleaded no contest to charges she embezzled money from the Hardy Volunteer Fire Department.

Deborah Lynne Shifflett entered her plea Tuesday in Bedford County Circuit Court. She also agreed to repay up to $10,000 to the department. Shifflett, her late husband Jeffrey and the couple's son Cory were indicted in July 2009.

Jeffrey Shifflett served as the fire department's chief for 22 years. Authorities say he died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was charged with embezzlement and forgery.

Cory Shifflett pleaded guilty last November to seven embezzlement counts.

Prosecutors say the family embezzled at least $250,000 from the fire department.
