Firefighter Charged in Boating Death of Va. Teacher

August 18, 2010

A Richmond firefighter faces charges stemming from a fatal boat accident on the Rappahannock River that claimed the life of a Henrico County teacher.

Richmond Fire Department Capt. Steven W. Nixon was charged Wednesday in Lancaster County General District Court with aggravated involuntary manslaughter, felony child endangerment and several other counts.

The arrest warrants were obtained by the Virginia Marine
Resources Commission.

According to court documents, the 38-year-old Nixon was at the
helm when his 22-foot Chaparral bow-rider struck a channel marker at about 10 p.m. on July 5. Twenty-five-year-old Amanda Brady was killed. Nixon and eight others on the boat were injured, including four children.

A Richmond Fire Department spokesman says Nixon's status is being reviewed.
