Va. Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Sheriff's Deputy

August 25, 2010

Authorities in Scott County have captured a man suspected of wounding a sheriff's deputy.

Emergency Dispatcher Patsy Propest said Wednesday that 34-year-old Jonathan "Matt" Qualls of Duffield surrendered without incident about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Propest says Qualls was found at a cabin about a mile from where Deputy Thomas Bowen was shot on Monday night.

Qualls was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, felony use of a firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was held without bond Wednesday at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield. Jail records didn't indicate whether Qualls had an attorney.

Officials say Bowen was trying to serve warrants at Qualls' home. Bowen underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
