Va. Agencies in Favor of Police Shooting Range

August 26, 2010

Virginia Secretary of Administration Lisa Hicks-Thomas says she plans to decide within two weeks on a proposed law enforcement shooting range in Powhatan.

Hicks-Thomas says she'll take into account opposition from residents and local officials over the training center.

The state Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies this week said they had no objections to the 18-acre project.

The center would be built near Shiloh Baptist Church, which was founded by freed slaves in the 1870s. It would include four shooting ranges.

Opponents are concerned about safety, noise and the facility's location in a historic area.

The FBI pulled out of the project last month.
